Zimmer on Animal Morality

I just came across this post at Carl Zimmer's blog discussing some further examples of disgusting (both morally and physically) mating rituals around the animal kingdom. He was replying to the same New York Times article I discussed in my previous post. He has it exactly right. If conservatives expect us to learn good moral lessons from the penguins, they need to explain why we shouldn't also learn lessons from the vastly more common examples of wretched animal conduct.

Or, as I pointed out over at the Loom, you can't just pick and choose your lessons even from just the penguins. What are we to make, for example, of the following lesson? A clumsy and inept predator enters the colony and starts fumbling around for a cute little penguin chick to devour. No adults come to the rescue. They stand by passively watching. Even a single adult penguin, taking a run (or slide) at the predator would have it on the run. Let alone if several adults did this. And it is NOT a stretch to hope that they might do as suggested. In fact, they DO EXACTLY THAT, when a mother, who has lost her own chick, tries to "steal" another's chick. If the creationist is learning morality from the penguin, I'm glad he's not my parent!

You're an animal. It's a jungle out there. Not in my backyard. Morality is being better than the base animals. We can learn from the animals. No new taxes.

a modest experiment
